Is height a factor in beauty?

Height is half of beauty. According to this proverb a good height is a factor in beauty, put simply. This obession for height came to the top in around the 80s, when supermodels took the place of actresses on the podium of the world’s most beautiful women. But being short doesn’t mean you can’t be beautiful…

Before then, height wasn’t really a discriminating factor: Marilyn Monroe, an icon of the 50’s, had a fascinating shape and body despite her not being very tall. It was only when the supermodel era started that that wasn’t enough. A height more than a certain measure became a requirement.

In the last few years we can see a tide of change coming in: it’s the era of social media. Everyone on Instagram has pretty much the same height (the eye sees it this way) and that means you don’t need to follow the height standard to be a web star.

Height is a characteristic like any other: petite women seem very feminine, tall women make a show of all their majesty. Like in anything, there are advantages to treasure and disadvanges to ride around of.

Short vs minute people

We’ll start with short people: they have a short height, and they necessarily don’t have small bones. They often tend to have a low barycentre, which is a good idea to take a look at these tips here to optically elongate the figure and seem taller.

Minute people usually have a height shorter than 1.6 metres and have small bones. Their proportions are often balanced and that’s why it’s not rare for these people to also have a high barycentre. When choosing outfits, the key word here is verticality. Here you will want to keep your looks in the same colour palette (example of a colour palette: navy, royal blue, sky blue). Then you can go for short and one-breasted jackets with a 3/4 sleeve. Large or long jackets may “gobble up” the figure. Dresses are preferable to skirts (verticality…), but you can wear skirts too. Avoid knee-length and calf-length as they might make the leg shorter. Also, abstain from buying oversize and clothes that can make you look “childish”, like balloon skirts.

Tall people

Some people might not feel good about being tall for various reasons, and that’s fine. If you feel like this too, then you also know that your height doesn’t need to be emphasized at this point.

Here, we can use clothing pieces and accessories than can penalise short people: asymmetry, big and large prints, long jackets, horizontal lines (not in the largest part of the figure, though), oversize…

Dosing volumes is important as well: you want to either have a boxier top with a more fitting bottom or a more fitting top with a boxier bottom. As for bottoms, you pretty much go for anything if you barycentre is a bit low. If your barycentre is high you can lower it slightly. It’s a good idea to avoid monocrome and all vertical lines in general.

Shoes are really important. They are often the first thing that attracts attention, as people wonder if your height is a gift of nature or you are wearing a pair of heels. Here you have the whole world of shoes open to you: camperos, sneakers, cuissardes, mocassins… and you can wear them with any sock.

With all of this said, height isn’t significant when it comes to your beauty, you just need to play around with your clothes to rebalance your weak points and emphasize your strong ones.
